C

hili Hilly is located in the artists enclave of Sayan and sits directly overlooking the Ayung River valley with the volcanoes in sight just beyond. The house was built on a relatively small plot attached to an existing hotel area made of traditional looking buildings therefore one of the biggest challenges was to design something that would blend well with the surroundings yet achieve our goal of creating a contemporary home.

The Layout

We therefore developed a shell that from the outside looks like just another building with terracotta tiles and a pitched roof but once inside it becomes a tropical version of a contemporary loft space where free standing volumes on different levels get incorporated under one giant roof.

The materials

Another, more practical, challenge in this project was to run a construction site within a built area connected only by small foot paths so all the materials had to be carried in manually. Primary materials used throughout the house are red brick, century-old teak, polished concrete, pebble wash, along with iron pillars and beams for the structure as well as for the door frames of the rooms.
